The North Fork of Long Island is known for its lush farmland, quiet beaches, farm stands, and vineyards. There are plenty of family friendly activities to enjoy in this quaint part of Suffolk County. From Riverhead to Orient Point, there are indoor and outdoor activities that are suitable for kids of all ages. At the Long Island Aquarium see, feed, and touch a variety of fish and stingrays inside, then head outside to see the sea lion show and wade in the interactive sea marsh.
Pack a picnic and head to a vineyard for some wine tasting and live music.
Pick your own fruits and vegetables at Wickham’s Fruit Farm in Cutchogue or Patty’s Berries & Bunches in Mattituck.
In addition to having fresh produce, many of the farm stands have play areas for the kids or farm animals to see and pet. Check out Garden of Eve in Riverhead, Harbes Family Farm in Mattituck and Jamesport, and Cutchogue Village Farms.
Relax on one of the quiet beaches and playgrounds at Orient Beach State Park, South Jamesport Beach, and Veterans Memorial Park in Mattituck.
Call ahead and schedule a horseback riding lesson at Highwind Farm in Mattituck.
Explore historic buildings, gardens, and old farm equipment at Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead.
Custer Institute in Southold offers tours and stargazing through its powerful telescopes, every Saturday from dusk until midnight. Less moon is better for stargazing. Try to schedule a visit during the New Moon or crescent phase.
Visit Horton's Point Lighthouse Park, which is perched on cliffs in Southold overlooking the Long Island Sound.
Ride the antique Carousel in Greenport.
The Railroad Museum of Long Island has two locations on the East End: Greenport and Riverhead. Both are small, but train lovers enjoy the pictures and models. The admission fee includes access to both museums, along with a ride on the World’s Fair miniature train.
Children 10 years of age and under burn some serious energy at Safari Adventure in Riverhead. Climb up the 4 story play structure, bounce, and play video games.
Black lights, hi-tech scoring, music, and videos make bowling at The All Star in Riverhead pretty impressive. Executive chef designed menus and food cooked in a wood burning brick oven takes The All Star to a whole new level.
Some kids love to shop, while others make even a quick trip to the store stressful. The variety of stores and bargains found at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead makes this place worth checking out.
Order a cheese plate or a fondue at the quaint Village Cheese Shop in Mattituck. Enjoy some gourmet treats and pickup some not so cheesy souvenirs at the Love Lane Sweet Shoppe.
At the East End Seaport Museum in Greenport, learn about maritime heritage, the fishing and oyster industry, and see model ships and lighthouse lenses. While there, sign up for a Harbor Cruise.
For hands-on fun, the Long Island Science Center in Riverhead offers a variety of exhibits and weekly themed activities.
Rent a kayak or a bike in Southold at Eagle’s Neck Paddling Company.
Play a round of mini golf at Drossos Motel in Greenport. Practice hitting at the batting cages, play mini golf, and ride the Hippo Slide at Outeast Family Fun in Riverhead.
Peconic Water Sports in Greenport offers lessons to anyone interested in learning how to water ski, wakeboard, kneeboard, and surf.
Hit golf balls at the driving range or play a full round of golf at Island’s End Golf Course and Country Club. Tackle 9 hole par 3 golfing at Cedars Golf Club.
Cheer on the North Fork Ospreys at a Hamptons Collegiate Baseball game.
Every Saturday, cars speed around the track at the Riverhead Raceway.
See the goats and pickup some award-winning cheese at Goodale Farm or Catapano Dairy Farm.
Take the ferry to Shelter Island, then hike the Mashomack Preserve. The preserve includes 12 miles of coastline, as well as tidal creeks, woodlands, and fields. See a variety of plants and wildlife.
