6 Places Long Island Kids Can Get Their Hands Dirty This Summer

Keeping kids clean is a constant chore—they seem to be magnets for food, markers, play dough, dirt and other messy things. But it's important to drop the wipes every once in a while and head outdoors for some down and dirty fun. The sensory experience of putting their hands in the mud and dirt (and not getting in trouble for it) is liberating for little ones. And don't worry moms and dads—you can hose them off later.

Our Backyard
Long Island Children's Museum, Garden City

Discovering Dinos/Paleontology
Science Museum of Long Island, Plandome
Unearth prehistoric fossils and bones and even create your own fossil to take home with the classes, parties and camps at SMLI.

The Children's Garden
Suffolk County Farm & Education Center, Yaphank
Children will learn to prep the land, till the soil, plant seeds and tend to a their gardens. Sessions offered throughout the school year and an eight-week one during the summer.

Benner's Farm, East Setauket
In the fall and spring months, toddlers and older children can take part in various farm fun workshops including gardening, caterpillars, pumpkin and more.

Little Sprouts
Hallockville Museum Farm, Riverhead
Kids ages 3-5 can try out camp life this summer with this gentle, nurturing and playful camp that provides your child with the opportunity to care for farm animals, meet new friends, and engage in farm chores. 

And for a true celebration of getting dirty, visit International Mud Day at the Suffolk County Farm & Education Center in Yaphank on Saturday, June 27. Activities include messy play, puddle jumping, crafts, visiting the barnyard and marching in the rubber boot parade. Basically, all the mud you can wear!
