Best Kids' Storytimes in the Hamptons & North Fork

6/1/15 - By James Smith

Bookstores and libraries abound on the North and South Forks, and some of our country’s most popular writers have called the region home. But while our children may not yet be able to appreciate Truman Capote or Nelson DeMille, kids' storytime sessions offer them an introduction to age-appropriate literature—and a fun one at that. Almost every East End library hosts some manner of children’s storytime, but a handful offer their own unique approaches. We've rounded up our favorites. And for more activities in the area this summer, check out our Hamptons & North Fork Guide.

Activities tied to the story, such as nature walks and scavenger hunts, often follow (weather permitting). Activity fees can apply and advance registration is recommended.

The Group for the East End environmental organization offers an outdoors-themed story hour for children ages 2 to 5 at Downs Farm Preserve on the second Tuesday of each month during the summer. Sessions, held from 10am to 11am, can emphasize the North Fork’s cultural and environmental heritage and include craft creation.

Canio’s Books
290 Main Street, Sag Harbor
631-725-4926

The venerable East End rare books emporium offers a special children’s story hour on the first Saturday of each month at 10:30am. Children must be at least 4 years old and accompanied by an adult. Expect a bit more sophistication here than at local libraries and museums, and a reading list that’s more eclectic. Canio’s has a well-earned reputation for supporting local writers and educators.
