Kid Lit Takes Center Stage at Brooklyn Book Festival This Saturday

9/17/15 - By Jody Mercier

Calling all the little literary lovers: Brooklyn Heights is the place to be this weekend as the Brooklyn Book Festival debuts its very first Children's Day, an all-day, FREE reading festival with top children's book authors and illustrators. The outdoor event kicks off on Saturday, September 19, in downtown Brooklyn the day before the adult version of the lit fest takes place.

Expect two stages of non-stop storytimes, a fast-paced illustration face-off, music and workshops, and with readings from pop-up books to Mad Libs and chapter books, there's something here for the toddlers on up to the teens. No wonder this event made our September GoList and Weekend Event picks!

The Brooklyn Book Festival started in 2006 to highlight local authors and quickly mushroomed in popularity, becoming one of the premier book festivals in the country. Organizers say they introduced the Children's Day this year, because they'd simply run out of space at the grown-up version, which typically hosted a single children's stage for kid lit.

"The Children's Day offered us the opportunity to significantly expand our programming for children, which had always been a popular part of the festival, but unlike the larger festival had no ability to grow due to our space constraints," Liz Koch, vice president and co-producer of Brooklyn Book Festival, said in a statement to Mommy Poppins.

With its own dedicated day, the kid fest will take over two outdoor stages (one for picture books and another for young readers), as well as host events like Music Class Today by the Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals creator David Weinstone and the Illustrators in Action live drawing duel, as well as offer educational workshops at the nearby NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering's auditorium, such as How to Tell a Story (ages 6 and up) and of course, there will be book vendors aplenty set up throughout the area from local bookstores like Greenlight to publishers like Enchanted Lion Books, and food trucks for a quick nosh. Expect readings to kick off around 10:00am and events to wrap up around 4pm. Look for top kid lit names like Jon Scieszka, Lenore Look, Kevin Henkes, Drew Deywalt and 20-plus other kids authors as they take the stage or sign books for eager fans (and their parents).

The Brooklyn Book Festival is held at MetroTech Commons in Downtown Brooklyn, between Court Street and the courthouses. The main festival day, Sunday, September 20, includes a slew of great events, too, and a number of related lit events are running throughout the borough this week in celebration of the festival's 10th anniversary.
