Weekend Fun for Long Island Kids: Hikes & Fishing, Peter Rabbit, Fossils April 11-12

Spring has finally sprung, and folks are enjoying the outdoors for the first time in what seems like forever. Head to downtown Port Jefferson for harborside views, and tinker around at the Maritime Explorium. Families can also take a drive to Setauket or Islip for guided family hikes, or sail aboard a seal watching cruise out of Freeport. There's also a FREE spring festival in Syosset.

Peter Rabbit - Smithtown. At the Smithtown Performing Arts Center, this is a live show. Cost: $10.

Finding Fossils - Garden City. At the Long Island Children's Museum, excavate your own dinosaur fossil.

Family Night Hike - Setauket. Ready to use your owl eyes, your fox walk and your deer ears? Gain a whole new appreciation for the night as hikers learn about and mimic how different animals function in the dark.Also on Saturday, April 18.

Unnatural Earth Day Walk - Islip. Celebrate Earth Day on this family walk by considering human impacts to the environment and differences between natural and unnatural aspects of the landscape. Seatuck guests walk the trails to learn what's natural and identify those unnatural things that have been left behind.

Spring Family Fishing Festival - West Babylon. At Belmont State Park, the whole family can enjoy a day of fishing. Loaner rods are available and techniques will be shared on how to catch then clean your fish. Call 631-321-3510 for more information. No fishing license required. FREE

Caterpillars & Critters - East Setauket. At Benner's Farm, make and take home a foot-long caterpillar that will grow into a flower garden. Go on a bug treasure hunt and learn how to tell which bugs and critters that live in our garden help or hinder us.

Dinosaur Day - Glen Cove. At Garvies Point Museum, explore the world of dinosaurs. Learn about dinosaurs from our Geologists, see and touch real fossils, try out our fossil "dig," and make your own "fossil" to take home!

Town of Oyster Bay Spring Festival - Syosset. At Syosset-Woodbury Park, there will be arts & crafts, face painting, petting zoo, bounce houses and more.

Sunday, April 12

Family Sundays at the Museum - Roslyn. Weekly events for families at the Nassau County Museum of Art.

Seatuck Family Nature Club - Islip. These programs will be geared around the current season and include topics such as seasonal birds, tremendous trees and signs of the season. FREE

Sunday Kids Club - East Hampton. Drop off kids for a morning camp at Hampton Kids.
