Long Island Kids' Activities December 13-14: Holiday Bonfire, Mommy Expo, Polar Express, Barnaby Saves Christmas, Celebrate with Candles & More

The holiday season is in full swing, and there are tons of family-friendly events happening across Long Island. Celebrate the season by taking in a live show, the Nutcracker balletmodel train exhibit or bonfire. Or cook up some fun with each other by decorating gingerbread houses or with baking lessons.

Holiday Model Train Exhibit - Babylon. This model train tells a visual story about the Babylon Trolley system that used to carry passengers from Amityville to Babylon Village. It is 240-sq. ft. large. Through Jan. 4. Cost: Free

The Wizard of Oz - Smithtown. Live performance at Smithtown Performing Arts Center. Runs through Jan. 25, 2015. Cost: Adults/$35, Children under 12/$20.

Holiday Lights Spectacular - Wantagh. At Jones Beach, see the new and expanded holiday village with more than 150 animated scenes, hot beverages, snacks and a s'mores pit. Through Jan. 2, 2015. Exceptions listed. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Cost: $25/car on Fri-Sun. $20/car Mon-Thurs.

Bayville Winter Wonderland - Bayville. Runs through Jan. 4, 2015. Santa's Toy Factory Funhouse, Captain Bay's Yo Ho Holiday Light Show, Bayville Holiday Express Train Ride, A Magical Meeting with Santa Arctic Ice Skating Adventure, Bradley Bay's Rock Climbing, Holiday Character Meet and Greet, Holiday Arts and Crafts and Holiday Story Telling. An arcade, indoor rock climbing and the Beaches and Cream Soda Shop. Miniature golf and Ropes Course - weather permitting. Cost: $21/per person.

Boardwalk Lights - Long Beach. A free holiday nautical themed light show display on the boardwalk. The festivities will run through mid-January from Long Beach Boulevard to Magnolia Boulevard. The Boardwalk Lights will be open every evening from 5-9pm. Cost: Free.

Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Holiday Light Show - Bayport. Through Dec. 21. Open 5-9pm. Drive through a mile-long wooded trail filled with light displays and holiday vignettes. Note: The holiday village will not be open this year. Cost: Monday-Thursday $15 per car, Friday-Sunday $20 per car (must purchase tickets online/by phone in advance).

Explorer Family Backpacks - Uniondale. Pick up a backpack and explore the world through this Hofstra University gallery. Cost: Free.

Saturday, December 13

Breakfast With Santa - Garden City. At the Garden City Hotel. A longtime family favorite, meet Mr. & Mrs. Claus while enjoying a Garden City Hotel Holiday Breakfast. Seatings at 8:30am or 11am. Also on Dec. 20. Cost: Call for pricing.

Holiday Bonfire – Riverhead. Join the community for a holiday bonfire along the Peconic Riverfront. Huge gingerbread house will be on display. Santa Claus comes down the river in a boat decorated with lights. Children can line up to sit with Santa for photos. Free hot chocolate, candy canes and Blue Duck cookies. Cost: Free.

Gingerbread Decorating Workshop - Brigehampton. Families and kids can decorate a gingerbread house. Cost: $20 members, $30 for nonmembers.

Holiday Baking Lessons – Hicksville. Christmas and Hanukkah baking lessons where kids can make gingerbread, chocolate sleighs and holiday cookie ornaments. Cost: $39-49.

Winter Wonderland at the Whaling Museum - Cold Spring Harbor. Every Saturday in December from 1-4pm, The Whaling Museum and Education Center of CSH museum is turned into a “Frozen”-themed winter wonderland. Our exhibits and workshops are dazzling with sparkles and snowflakes. Enjoy self-serve snow-tastic crafts for all ages and a winter-themed scavenger hunt. All free with paid admission. Cost: Free w/ museum admission.

Decorate a Holiday Tree for the Birds – Bridgehampton. Feeding wild birds in winter is especially important in our area, where development has removed a good deal of natural winter food resources for local birds. Join the SoFo staff to make bird-friendly decorations for a holiday tree, using seeds, suet, and dried fruits. Cost: $7/admission + $3 materials fee.

Breakfast with Emett & Wyldstyle – Smithtown. Breakfast and pictures with Emett & Wyldstyle from The Lego Movie. Includes a photo op, breakfast and face painting. Cost: $7 per person, 12 months and under are free, Breakfast and open play price $16.95 per child.

Polar Express – Amityville. At Vittorio’s Restaurant, attendees will enjoy special appearances by Santa, Elsa and other guests. Featuring a delicious brunch menu (with favorites such as French Toast, Crab Cake Benedict, Biscuits & Gravy and more) a reading of Polar Express by the Conductor himself, appearances by Santa and his elf, and Queen Elsa from Frozen. Goodie bags. Cost: Adults $38, Children $28.

Barnaby Saves Christmas - Port Jefferson. Live performance. Cost: $10/ticket.

Mommy Expo - Wantagh. At Kidville Wantagh, local vendors, information, parents coming together, play space for kids. Cost: Free.

Celebrate with Candles - Garden City. Candles are traditionally used in celebrations all over the world, and are multicultural symbols of light and life to a diverse group of people. At this workshop, kids can decorate their own custom candles to light up the holiday season Cost: $3 + $12 museum admission.

Science Saturday at the Long Island Science Center – Riverhead. Enjoy a day at the Long Island Science Center. Cost: $5/person.

Craft for Kids at Lakeshore Learning Store – New Hyde Park. Thanksgiving craft at the Lakeshore Learning Store. Cost: Free.

Sunday, December 14

Hanukkah Family Celebration – Commack. This Suffolk Y JCC event includes candle-lighting, latkes and donuts. Cost: Free.

Breakfast With Santa – East Hampton. Breakfast with Santa, photos, holiday crafts and more. At Hampton Kids. Cost: EHIT & HK Members $10 adults/$7 children Non-Members $15 adults/$12 children. (Reservations required).

Children's Baking Workshop – Garden City. At Sugar and Spice, little bakers will make several kinds of holiday cookies to take home. Pre-registration is required. Cost: $50/student.

Winter Concert & Chanukah Party – Old Westbury. Rock out with Music for Aardvarks and taste the holidays with Bakers and Shakers for the Sid Jacobson JCC festivities. Cost: Free.

Community Chanukah Celebration – Oceanside. A celebration for the entire family at Friedberg JCC. Cost: Free.

Holiday Buffet With Santa – Medford. Various seating’s for this meal with Santa include carving station, holiday desserts and a buffet. Cost: $28.95/adults, $14.50/children ages 4-12.

Menorah Workshop at the Whaling Museum – Cold Spring Harbor. Dive into the world of oil, from whale oil to olive oil. See different oil lamps from our collection, try testing seeds for their oil content and create a wooden menorah for Hannukah. Cost: $10/child, $8/sibling.
