Indoor Swimming Pools for Families on Long Island

Things to do with kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Families on Long Island

(Image courtesy of the Town of Hempstead)

If you haven't had a chance to get away this winter and spend some time by a pool, there's still hope and you don’t have to brave the crowds at the airport to do so. Why not visit one of the many indoor swimming pools Long Island has to offer?

We’ve rounded up some of the Island’s affordable family-friendly indoor pools. Check out each location’s website for family swim schedules and rules.  Some require swimmers to wear a bathing cap and have specific hours for free swim times. They also offer several options for swim lessons, from the little ones just getting their feet wet to the more advanced swimmer looking to improve their strokes.  Who knows!  Maybe you have the next Michael Phelps or Natalie Coughlin in the making!

One of the most convenient and least expensive options for the whole family to go for a swim could very well be in your own neighborhood. Have a look at your school district’s website and look under the “Athletics” link to determine if it offers a community swim program. Times, fees, and policies vary for each school.

Nassau County

Echo Park Indoor Pool
399 Nassau Blvd., West Hempstead
Daily pass for county residents is $7; $3.50 for children ages 5–9. Noncounty residents $8; $4 for children 5–9. Echo Park Pool is open 7 days a week from 10am to 10pm to Town of Hempstead residents with a daily, seasonal or annual pass. The facility has an Olympic-size pool with a dive tank, men’s and women’s sauna, lockers, and a snack bar. Swim classes are also available.

Long Beach Recreation Center
Magnolia Blvd. and West Bay Dr., Long Beach
Daily pass: $7, children under 17, $3. Click here for information on membership.
The Olympic-size pool at “the Rec” is open 7 days a week to both residents and nonresidents of Long Beach. Click here for open-swim schedule.

North Hempstead Aquatic Activity Center at Tully Park
1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park
Daily pass: Residents $11, $7 for children 3 –12,  $8 for children 13 -17. Non-residents pay $14 as a guest to a resident. Click here for information on membership.
Two words: WATER. SLIDE. North Hempstead Aquatic Activity Center is open to Town of North Hempstead residents 7 days a week. Click here for hours. In addition to the 100 feet of spiraling water-slide fun, there is a wading pool and six water-spray towers. Go ahead, just try to get the kids to come out for lunch!

YMCA of Long Island Glen Cove
125 Dosoris Lane, Glen Cove
While the YMCA does not offer daily passes to the pool as some of the towns' pools do, it does offer a free one-day pass for families to visit any of the Long Island locations. Perhaps the allure of one-stop shopping for kiddie yoga, pee-wee sports, crafts, and FREE drop-in child care will inspire you to buy a membership so that the whole family can go for a dip whenever the mood strikes!

Eisenhower Park

Merrick and Stewart Aves., East Meadow

Nassau County residents with Leisure Pass: $5 for Adults, $3 for Children 4-17, $2.50 for Seniors. Without Leisure Pass/Non-Resident: $15 Adults, $10 Children. Guest Pass: $23, includes pool, fitness center, Jacuzzi, and sauna usage.

Built in 1998 for the Goodwill Games, The Nassau County Aquatic Center at Eisenhower Park is one of the finest swimming facilities in the United States. While it regularly hosts major swimming and diving competitions, it is also open to the public.  Pool hours are from 9am to 5pm daily.

Suffolk County

Brookhaven AquaticCenter
300 Mastic Beach Rd, Mastic Beach
Daily Passes for residents are $7 for adults and $5 for children. Nonresident daily passes are $12 for adults and $10 for children.
Brookhaven Aquatic Center is open 7 days a week to both residents and nonresidents of the Town of Brookhaven. Call 631-281-2870 for open swim sessions.

YMCA of Long Island
Bay Shore
, East Hampton, Holtsville, Huntington, Patchogue, coming soon Riverhead.
Just like the YMCA program in Nassau County, the Suffolk YMCAs do not offer daily passes to the pool as some of the towns' pools do, they do offer a free one-day pass for families to visit any of the Long Island locations. Perhaps the allure of one-stop shopping for kiddie yoga, pee-wee sports, crafts, and FREE drop-in child care will inspire you to buy a membership so that the whole family can go for a dip whenever the mood strikes!
