Indoor Sports Arenas and Facilities with Programs for Kids on Long Island

9/15/09 - By

In addition to our weekly events posts, we are trying to share with you some of Long Island's best classes and programs offered for kids. Last week we wrote about some of the world class ballet programs being offered. This week,  since we all know this great Indian Summer isn't gonna last forever, we want to share some of the Island's best Indoor Sports Programs. There are plenty of indoor sports facilities here, but not all of them offer great children's programs. Here are some of the most notable facilities which offer great children's programs, classes and leagues:

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

WEST (Winners Edge Sports Training)-Located in Huntington, WEST may top the list for programs geared for kids. One of the only all-kids facilities, WEST offers year round programs, clinics, camps, and teams for kids ages 18 months-12. WEST hosts SoccerTots and Lil Sluggers, both franchise programs offered across the tri-State area, and WEST is the only spot on the North Shore you can find the popular programs, which introduce the youngest athletes to sports through a fun and non-competitive program. The facilities at WEST are great, and I can personally vouch for the staff, who are knowledgeable and patient but also energetic and motivating. With a gradual instruction program the kids are prepared for the next step and ultimately more serious competitive leagues if you choose. Despite running a great big facility with loads of programs, WEST manages to maintain a small town feel-you can request instructors as you wish (and most of the time get them), they offer private lessons upon request, and they'll even bring their programs and parties to you-that is if you have the space to host! Visit their website for more details and a program schedule.Winners Edge Sports Training (WEST), 156 Railroad, Huntington Station, Long Island

SportimeNY-If you've driven by a Sportime facility and you're like me, you probably thought it was another Indoor tennis center. And, that it is, but what you may not have realized is that many of hte Sportime locations also offer multi-sport facilities and programs. And, while all ages can use the facilities, Sportime offers some great programs and clinics for children and some of the locations. I've heard the parent and me programs are great as well as the multi-sport sampler class offered for 4-7 year olds. Sportime facilities are generally first-rate and very clean, so, fear not, this is not your typical sweaty, stinky gym. The only downside to Sportime is that not all programs are offered at all locations, so you should be sure to check their website to see what's offered at your local facility. Turf Island-Relatively new, Turf Island is a beautiful indoor sports complex which was designed to offer programs for turf sports, which on Long Island translates to flag football, soccer and, of course, lacrosse. And they offer great programs, clinics, teams and camps for just that, but they also offer a program specifically for younger kids, called Kidnastics. Kidnastics programs include everything from Parent and Me to Sports Samplers for 3-4 year olds. They have a full schedule with multiple days as options, which is important because there's nothing worse than finding a program you love, only to realize it won't fit into your schedule. For more information about Turf Island and the Kidnastics program, check out their webpage. Turf Island, Oil City Area, Oceanside, Long Island

Sportsplex - I like Sportsplex because my sons love to play basketball, and sportsplex is, believe it or not, one of the rare indoor sports facilities that offers basketball programs for those who aren't old enough to play in a competitive league. And, they're rates are really reasonable, too. Sure, the facilities aren't state of the art, but when we're talking about a gym, a few hoops, and a basketball, you don't need much. They also offer hockey programs in addition to the regular turf sports: soccer, lacrosse, and football. There are programs for young kids ages 3-6 and a separate more advanced clinic program for those ages 7-12, birthday parties and summer and vacation camps. And, Sportsplex manages to save you the common annual membership fee, which often runs somewhere near $100. Visit their website for more information. Long island Sports Complex-The newest of the Indoor sports complexes, LISC proudly boasts terrific facilities and a great spectator area, which is a perk for us parents. With a reasonable membership rate of $50 per family, it makes it worth while for everyone to join, since there are often family events and clinics taking place. The location is great, just off the Meadowbrook Parkway, which makes it easy to get to even if you don't live on the South Shore. And, LISC is open 7 days a week and available for private party rental as well. For more info, click here for their website. Long Island Sports Complex, 103 Mill Rd, Freeport, Long Island
