If you're a family with two kids, you know the drill when it comes to standard hotel rooms: you either have the kids share a bed (and deal with the fighting that results), or each parent sleeps with one kid and gets woken up all night by a foot or elbow to the face. If you have more than two kids, you likely have to shell out more money for adjoining rooms.

Hotels with bunk beds solve that problem by giving everyone their own sleeping space. Not only that, bunk beds are just plain fun for kids to sleep in. "Are there bunk beds?" is the first question many kids ask when their parents book a hotel room.

Here are 25 of the best family hotels with bunk beds across the US, plus some in Canada and the Caribbean. These bunk bed hotel rooms for families are located in big cities, near theme parks, along beaches, in skiing towns, and more.

Our Guide to Family-Friendly Resorts & Hotels is full of more great places to stay with kids, including our list of the best family vacation hotel suites, cottages, and villas.

Why Hotels with Bunk Beds Are a Game-Changer for Families

Bunk beds can revolutionize the way your family travels. I have a girl and a boy, so we usually get a room with two queen beds and each grown-up sleeps with the child of the same gender. We've realized that as the kids get bigger, there may come a time when no one wants to sleep in the same bed as my son. Bunk beds can provide much-appreciated personal space for both kids and adults.

My kids also feel excited about sleeping in bunk beds and having their own space separate from the parents. They don't share a room at home, but they actually enjoy spending time together and having conversations that don't include adults. Luckily, we have one kid who loves the top bunk and gets excited about sleeping up high, while the other likes the cave-like setting of the bottom bunk.

Bunk beds can also make things easier for families with more than two kids. Some bunk bed hotel rooms for families offer queen bunks, or they offer a rollaway, fold-out bed, or pack-and-play for the third kid to sleep in. There are even rooms with multiple bunk beds! We also find that bunk bed rooms and suites are often less expensive than getting two adjoining rooms.

What to Look for in a Family Hotel Room with Bunk Beds

One of our wish-list items when we travel is a space that has light or sound separation from our kids so if they decide to go to sleep before we do, we're not stuck in a dark, silent room until we go to bed. Check out the room description before booking to see if it's a suite with audio or visual barriers, or if it's just bunk beds in the same room. In some cases (like at theme parks where we're all crashing at 9pm) it may not matter.

You may also want to consider how many bathrooms you'll need. We like having multiple bathrooms for beach vacations where everyone is in a rush to get in and out of the shower, but we don't mind sharing one on a city vacation. Adjoining rooms or a suite may be better if you need two bathrooms.

If you're taking a longer trip, consider the space in your room as well. For one to three nights, you might be ok with an efficient bunk bed room without a lot of storage or personal space, but will likely need more space for trips that are four nights or longer.

FAQs about Hotels Bunk Beds

Q: Are hotel bunk beds safe for young kids?

A: While most hotel bunk beds follow safety guidelines, it's safest for kids to be at least 6 years old to sleep on the top bunk. Be sure to check for guardrails!

Q: Do hotels charge more for bunk bed rooms?

A: Not necessarily. Many bunk bed rooms are the same price as, or even cheaper than, booking two rooms. This is especially true of family-friendly hotel chains.

Q: Can you request a bunk bed room when booking?

A: You can! Call the hotel or check online room descriptions. Bunk bed rooms are often labeled “family suite” or “kids’ room” in booking tools. We also check the room pictures to make sure we're getting what we were hoping for.

Q: Are there hotels with bunk beds for teens and older kids?

A: Yes! Many luxury and city hotels offer full-size bunks for older kids who want space.
