My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

Family Events at Historic Belmont Park

Things to do with kids: Family Events at Historic Belmont Park

You don't have to be a fan of thoroughbred racing to thoroughly enjoy a day at Belmont Racetrack. The Breakfast at the Belmont program (that we recommended for Father's Day) is a great way to get an intimate look at all aspects of the park, before the gates open to the crowds. Belmont's backyard is equipped with a playground area, a duck pond, a concession area, and the paddock, where you see the horses just before the race. On Family Fun Days On Sundays bouncy houses, games, and activities fill the yard as themes and activities change weekly.

Father's Day Ideas For All Types Of Dads

Things to do with kids: Father's Day Ideas For All Types Of Dads

As a little girl I thought of my dad as a superhero. I imagined that after tucking me in he would fly off into the night and rid the world of evildoers. Now, a parent myself, I realize my childhood dream wasn't all that far off. Like many fathers on Long Island, my dad leaped from job to train to home on a daily basis, helped with homework and dinner, and of course tucked us in every night. This year on Father's Day, I say we crank Dad's superhero status on up to 11 and give him a day worthy of a super-duper superhero. So what does Dad enjoy most on Father's Day? I guess that depends on whom you ask. We compiled a list of activities as diverse as the dads, granddads, uncles, and brothers we love. Whatever you choose, we're sure it'll make dad feel like a superhero once again. Enjoy! And please be sure to check out our calendar of events for even more fun on Father's Day.

South Fork Wineries with Kids

Things to do with kids: South Fork Wineries with Kids

Mommy Poppins isn't exactly the place one would expect wines to be highlighted; but let's face it - aren't the best spent days when your children are happy doing something you enjoy?  Long Island wineries have earned recognition for their diversity and ability to produce high quality wines. While the north fork is better known for its wineries, the three that reside on the south fork should not be overlooked - and, in fact, may be preferred.

Things to do with kids: Long Island Kids' Activities June 8 & 9: Greek Village Festival, 39th Annual LI Bavarian Heritage Festival, Pinkalicious

This weekend, head on over to the Greek Village Festival at the Church of the Holy Resurrection in Brookville, where you'll enjoy Greek food, vendors, and more.  The 39th Annual LI Bavarian Heritage Festival is taking place at Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square, where you'll feast on German style food, listen to live music, see Bavarian folk dancing, and enjoy rides, games, and more.  At the Long Island Children's Museum in Garden City, Plaza Theatrical Presents Pinkalicious, the story of a girl who indulges in way too many pink cupcakes and develops a case of Pinkititis!  Learn how flowers develop their scents and partake in a blindfolded test to identify plants by smell at the Kids & Family Program: Making Sense Of Scents at Old Westbury Gardens in Old Westbury.  Also on tap: National Geographic Little Explorers Oceans World Day at Pottery Barn Kids, Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, and The Real Story Of Little Red Riding Hood at CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale.  As always, check out our events calendar every day for fun activities for the family!  Also check out our articles on Farmers' Markets on Long Island: Fresh Local Food for Your Family and Great Long Island Beaches for Families Post-Sandy.

Great Hair Salons For Long Island Kids

Things to do with kids: Great Hair Salons For Long Island Kids

Call it superstition, tradition, or a little bit of both, but I waited until my son's first birthday to get his first haircut. He was blessed with a great head of thick, dark brown hair, and, while his bottle style curls were adorable and garnered him many compliments, he was often mistaken for a baby girl, even when dressed in blue clothing. His first haircut came with much anticipation and delight, as we could leave those "oh what a cute little girl" days behind us and finally acquire that all-American boy look. For those of you who are taking the plunge into getting your kid's first haircut, or are just looking for a kid friendly salon experience overall, when it comes to cutting those precious locks, there are plenty of hair salons on Long Island to choose from. Kiddie salons are great places to go to, as the stylists have the patience, skills, and expertise in cutting kids hair, plus the atmosphere is appealing to the younger set. Here's a sampling of salons for kids in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Long Island Kids' Activities June 1 & 2: Rocket Competition, Antique & Collectible Auto Show, Birds of Prey & Geocaching

Things to do with kids: Long Island Kids' Activities June 1 & 2: Rocket Competition, Antique & Collectible Auto Show, Birds of Prey & Geocaching

This weekend, head on over to the Rocket Competition at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, where you'll build your very own rocket, complete with streamers, wings, and fins, and then launch it off the museum's launch pad.  The Antique & Collectible Auto Show is taking place at Old Westbury Gardens in Old Westbury. I took my son to this event last year, and he was in complete awe of the rows and rows of cars! You also get to interact with the owners of the vehicles and can ask them questions. At the Sands Point Preserve in Sands Point, enjoy a double-feature event: Birds of Prey & Geocaching. First, you'll learn about birds and why they are important to Long Island ecology. Then grab your GPS or smartphone with a geocaching app and go on a spring scavenger hunt through the preserve. The Harbor Fest Dock Day & Craft Festival is taking place at the Town Dock in Port Washington, where you'll enjoy a craft fair, cruises, live music, an organic farmers market, and more. Also on tap: Li Liu-Chinese Acrobat at Longwood Public Library in Middle Island, and the Sheep Shearing Festival at the Sherwood-Jayne House in Setauket. As always, check out our events calendar every day for fun activities for the family!  Long Island is home to many beautiful parks so please be sure to check out our articles on Suffolk County Parks and Nassau County Parks.
