Long Island Kids' Activities August 11 and 12: India Day Parade and IndiaFest, Paumanauke Pow Wow, and Firemen's Carnival

Long Island is celebrating its diversity this weekend, with the India Day Parade on Saturday and IndiaFest on Sunday, and BACCA's Paumanauke Pow Wow. There's also critters, critters everywhere: Reptiles Rule at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center, Butterflies Abound! a Bug Safari at the Old Westbury Gardens, and a Bat Safari at the Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Oh my! Round out your weekend with the Sag Harbor Firemen's Carnival. Take a look at our events calendar for more fun activities this weekend and all week long.

Reptiles Rule

Turtles, lizards, and snakes rule habitats around the world and right here on Long Island. Join us for a live reptile presentation and make a reptile craft to take home. Registration recommended.

Butterflies Abound!

Hunt elusive grasshoppers, butterflies, predatory insects and other creepy, crawly creatures in the gardens. Bring a butterfly net and collecting jars so an entomologist can identify what you find.

Sag Harbor Firemen's Carnival

This annual beachside carnival features all of the usual rides and games such as a ferris wheels, rides that spin you really fast, and games where the fortunate few can win gigantic stuffed animals in improbable colors. There are also rides for younger children. There will of course be hot dogs, cotton candy, funnel cake, and perhaps even deep-fried twinkies. Proceeds from the carnival benefit the Sag Harbor Fire Department. Look in local stores for coupons offering a discount on the ride-all-you-want bracelets.

Family Adventures: Bat Safari
Connetquot River State Park Preserve

$3 per child, $4 per adult
Come join us for our last bat safari of the season, right here at Connetquot! Enter the mysterious world of these misunderstood animals. Enjoy humorous indoor activities that separate myths from reality. As the sun goes down, we will take a short outdoor walk around the buildings to observe bats as they begin their evening hunt. Registration is required.
